PAST PRESIDENTS

Martin Saaiman went to President of South African Golf Association in 2021/22.

We have been fortunate enough to have continuity in Secretary's, Alec Roe to 1964; Boyton Sullivan from 1964 to April, 1980; Darrel Herbert from May 1980 to October, 1987 and Joan Herbert our current Secretary from November 1987.

Our Open Amateur Championship Trophy has, during its fifty-nine year history, had many well -known names etched into the silver.

The 1949 Open was won by the legendary Jimmy Boyd with a score of 283. His name appears again in 1951 and 1952. Other well known multiple winners in those early years are Reg Taylor – 1953 and 1955, Denis Hutchinson – 1954. 1956 and joint winner with Bobby Verwey in 1958. Barry Franklin was the only player to win three consecutive titles, namely in 1962, 1963 and 1964. During the late sixties and seventies a few names of players that turned professional and became household names appear. Bobby Cole – 1966; Hugh Baiocchi (tie with Neville Sundelson) – 1967; Andries Oosthuizen – 1972; Gavin Levenson – 1978.

Wilhelm Winsnes was a double winner in 1982 and 1983. Neville Clarke, who represented South Africa on many occasions, lifted the silverware in 1984. None other than Ernie Els had two wins in 1987 and 1989 as well as Attie Schwartzel in 2006 and 2007. Other names that are on the trophy and have been cropping up on the professional circuit are Ian Hutchings – 1988; Nic Henning – 1991; Martin Maritz –1995 and 1996.

Albert Kruger holds the record for the Tournament now known as the Ekurhuleni "Mark Burgess" Open Amateur Stroke play Championship with rounds of 62, 66, 66, 64 – 258 (-30). This feat was achieved in 2002 over the layout of ERPM Golf Club.

For obvious reasons a Qualifying Round for the Open Stroke play Championship was introduced in 1988.

The Ekurhuleni Golf Union is very well supported by the eighteen member Clubs with a total of seven thousand members. The Union conducts the various leagues, namely Handicap League (two sections) and Scratch League (three divisions) very successfully. Ekurhuleni Scratch League winning teams in the first division have always done reasonably well against the teams from the larger provinces in the annual Scratch League Finals. Pollak Park won the Scratch League Finals in 2010. The Inter Provincial squad has done very well over the years competing in the A and B divisions of the annual National Inter Provincial and more resent wins are the "B: Division in 2005 at Benoni Country Club and again in 2006 at East London Golf Club.

The other events that are staged very professionally by the Union and which are well supported are - the Open and Closed Foursomes Championship; Ekurhuleni/Flynn Trophy - Teams Championship (formerly "Mandy Weinberg Shield"); Open Senior Amateur Stroke play Championship; Open Under 23 Championships; Closed Stroke play Championship; and the Open Inter Club Senior Amateurs Championship and the recently introduced Mid-Amateur Open Championship and Mid Amateur Scratch League for players between the ages of 35 and 49 years of age.

The Ekurhuleni Golf Union hosted the inaugural Mid Amateur Inter Provincial at Pollak Park Golf Club in 2006. Our Mid Amateurs have won the "B" Division Inter Provincial in 2008 at Roodepoort Country Club and the "A" Division in 2010 at Worcester Golf Club.

The Senior Amateurs are not forgotten and this section is also conducted with enthusiasm, hosting monthly open competitions. The Union is represented annually by a team full of youthful verve in the Senior Amateurs Inter Provincial.

Our under 23 players have also given a good account of themselves over the years. They actually won the Under 23 Inter Provincial in 2001.

The Junior Foundation is also expertly run and results in players coming through the ranks to represent their Clubs in the various leagues and eventually represent their province.
